Polls show Brazilians' confidence in the Armed ForcesPolls show Brazilians' confidence in the Armed Forces

Brasília (DF) – Four opinion polls carried out in 2023 showed that the Armed Forces are the leaders in terms of trust among Brazilians. The surveys were carried out by IPEC (July), QUAEST (August and December) and DATAFOLHA (September).

The first survey was released by IPEC in July and showed that the Armed Forces had a Social Trust Index of 66% and ranked 5th among institutions. The survey also showed that, over the last five years, the Armed Forces had an average level of trust of 68.6%.

The survey by QUAEST Consulting and Research showed that the Armed Forces remain in a prominent position in the ranking of institutions. A confidence level of 74% was achieved. The survey was carried out between August 10 and 14, with the aim of measuring the level of trust Brazilians have in their institutions. In this survey, the evaluation of the Armed Forces was even better, ranking 3rd, two places above the IPEC survey in July. The QUAEST survey data also indicates that the historical average of Brazilians’ trust in the Armed Forces remains above 70%.

On September 15, 2023, the Datafolha poll was released. According to the poll, 34% of Brazilians trust the Armed Forces a lot, 44% trust them a little and 21% don’t trust them at all. The sum of the confidence indices (trust a lot and trust a little) shows that the Armed Forces reach the expressive figure of 78%, two more than in the last survey in 2021. The rate of 34% of Brazilians who trust the Armed Forces a lot positions the institution as the most trustworthy in the country. The Armed Forces also have the second lowest rate of distrust among institutions, according to Datafolha.

In December 2023, O Globo published a QUAEST survey on society’s trust in security institutions. Although the main mission of the Armed Forces, according to the Brazilian Constitution, is the Defense of the Homeland, they are employed in Public Security in exceptional cases and on a temporary basis. The Armed Forces obtained the highest reliability rating for public security, with 44% of those interviewed expressing that they trust them completely. In addition to topping the ranking for total trustworthiness, the Armed Forces achieved a 72% index considering total and partial trust.

In December 2023, the last survey carried out by QUAEST showed that trust in the Armed Forces grew over the course of the year, ranking first in total trust among Brazilians among the institutions surveyed.

The surveys show that the Brazilian population holds the Brazilian Army among the most trustworthy institutions. This result can be attributed to the work carried out by our military personnel throughout the country.
