Brasília (DF), 08/23/2022 – With a focus on contributing to international peace and security through the training of military and police personnel from friendly nations, the Ministry of Defense (MD), through the Single Forces, is promoting a series of courses in partnership with member states of the United Nations (UN). The project is a result of the commitment signed by Brazil at the UN Ministerial Conference, held in December 2021.

On Monday (22), the course on Peace Operations for Women began, aimed at expanding the role of women in the current mission scenarios, with emphasis, mainly, on human rights and humanitarian support. The training continues until August 26th, at the Naval Peace Operations Center (COpPazNav), in Rio de Janeiro, with the participation of 13 members from the following countries: Argentina, South Korea, United States, Philippines, Guatemala, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Portugal. Among them, six receive full financial support in compliance with the UN Ministerial Conference agreement.

Contribution – Brazil also has a history of contributions in the improvement of personnel for activities of explosive artifact removal and for the use of engineering material for the reconstruction of peace. In this regard, a course on mine action is underway, conducted by the Brazilian Joint Center for Peace Operations (CCOPAB) in Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

The goal is to prepare professionals to act as supervisors and monitors in humanitarian demining missions, both in peace missions under the aegis of the UN, and in support of international organizations or partnerships with friendly nations, as is currently happening in Colombia. Seven military personnel from Latin America are participating in the training: Colombia, Bolivia, Guatemala, and Paraguay.

So far, the military education exchange activities in the context of peace operations have also included the Engineering Equipment Maintenance course, with the participation of five African nations (Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya) at the Engineering Instruction Center (CIEng), Araguari-MG. According to Emcfa’s Deputy Head of International Operations, until the end of 2022, courses are planned in the areas of civilian protection, maritime task force, riverine operations, and horizontal engineering.
