The Aerial Demonstration Squadron (EDA – Esquadrão de Demonstração Aérea) – popularly known as the Smoke Squadron (Esquadrilha da Fumaça) – was recognized this year as an intangible cultural asset by the Air Force Command (COMAER), through the Historical and Cultural Institute of the Air Force (INCAER). According to the system conducted by the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), the traditions, uses and customs, representations, practices, knowledge, techniques, beliefs and values, historical and daily actions, places and ways of doing things present in society – along with the instruments, objects, artifacts and cultural places associated with them – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage, can be recognized as intangible cultural assets.

As such, one can mention the ways of creating, doing and living of the individuals who developed and develop the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), transmitted from generation to generation and, constantly, recreated and appropriated by individuals and groups as important elements of their identity and continuity, thus contributing to promote respect and preservation of the Institution’s memory.

The registration is done when the intangible asset is relevant to both the Institution and the Brazilian society, with the objective, also, of safeguarding the Cultural Heritage of the entity. The following are recognized as intangible heritage: Campo dos Afonsos, Danilo’s Opera, Bathing Bat – Lachê Lake, Campo Parnamirim, and the Decennial Class Reunion.

The Commander of the Smoke Squadron, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Garcia Pereira, highlighted the importance of the honor. “Certainly, this is one of the greatest recognitions received by this Squadron, which traditionally conducts the mission of spreading, nationally and internationally, the institutional image of the FAB for more than 70 years of history”, he pointed out.

Celebration

The Smoke Squadron completed, on May 14 this year, 71 years of existence, reaching in April this year the milestone of 4,000 aerial demonstrations performed in missions inside and outside the country.
