Modernization of Cascavel vehicle reaches advanced stageModernization of Cascavel vehicle reaches advanced stage

Brasília (DF) – The first prototype of the Cascavel reconnaissance vehicle and the revitalization of the Light Gun howitzer were presented to the Army High Command on Wednesday (29). The ceremony took place at the Army Headquarters in Brasília and was attended by the Army Commander, General Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva.

Cascavel NG Project: Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle in Transformation

The modernization of the EE-9 Cascavel Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle – Media on Wheels (VBR-MSR) is an important part of the Army’s Armored Forces Strategic Program. The aim is to turn the vehicle into a fundamental and highly technological part of the Brazilian Army’s arsenal.

According to Lieutenant-Colonel Fábio Musetti de Souza, Project Supervisor, “the modernization of the Cascavel represents an important technological advance for Military Engineering and for our Mechanized Forces. It is a complex engineering activity that, in close cooperation with the Defense Industrial Base, demonstrates the importance of developing new technologies for the country,” he said.

Innovations and improvements to the VBR-MSR EE-9 Cascavel

The project features a series of innovations and improvements, from the replacement of the engine and automatic gearbox with more powerful versions to the implementation of state-of-the-art systems to increase operational efficiency. Highlights include adaptations such as the tire pressure adjustment system for all types of terrain, a more efficient braking system, and the modernization of the turret control system, allowing the 90 mm cannon to be activated using a joystick. In addition, security was improved with the deployment of an anti-tank missile launcher system.

Revitalization of the Light Gun Howitzer: Nationalization and Efficient Maintenance

Another ambitious revitalization project underway is the improvement of the Light Gun howitzer, with a focus on nationalizing components with a history of failure. With around 450 items identified as susceptible to problems, the process aims to correct deficiencies and optimize the equipment’s overall performance.

The strategy adopted includes a thorough review and reverse engineering of specific components, without altering the original design, in order to maximize the equipment’s maintainability and extend its availability period. In addition, comprehensive maintenance support is being developed, including specialized training, regular supply of spare parts and specific tooling, to ensure the effectiveness and readiness of the Light Gun howitzer in any operational scenario.

Strategic importance for the Armed Forces

The modernization projects reinforce the Army’s commitment to increasing its operational capacity. The nationalization of production and the implementation of comprehensive support are important steps towards the efficient use of the Rattlesnake and Light Gun howitzer.
