A committee composed of the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Air Force Staff (EMAER) and the General Support Command (COMGAP) visited the worksite of the Commission for Airports in the Amazon Region (COMARA), in Alcântara (MA), on October 31. The objective of the event was to verify the progress of the work and to measure the difficulties encountered in the execution of the work by the Institution at the Alcântara Launching Center (CLA), located in the state of Maranhão.

The visit was attended by the Special Advisor to the Minister of Infrastructure, Marcelo de Canossa Macedo; the Vice Chief of EMAER, Air Major Valter Borges Malta; the Chief of the Fourth Sub-Chief of EMAER, Air Brigadier Alexandre Hoffmann; the Director of Investments of the National Civil Aviation Secretariat (SAC), Eduardo Henn Bernard; and the Deputy of Planning and Logistics of COMGAP, Lieutenant Colonel Enzo dos Santos Batista, who were accompanied by the President of COMARA, Air Major Brigadier Raimundo Nogueira Lopes Neto.

In the occasion, the General Officer emphasized the importance of the works carried out. “After the conclusion of the works, the airport infrastructure of the Alcântara Space Center (CEA) will be able to launch aerospace artifacts by aircraft,” pointed out Major Brigadier Nogueira.

The delegation was received by the CLA Director, Colonel Engineer Fernando Benitez Leal. There was also a presentation of the services performed by the Vice-President of COMARA, Aviator Colonel Mário Jorge Siqueira Oliveira, as well as on the progress of the work as a whole.

Continuing the visit, the members of the delegation were able to inspect and follow the earthwork and the concreting of the sidewalk of the new areas under construction.

The work at the CLA consists in the logistic improvement of access to the Alcântara Space Center (CEA), with the construction of a new yard and a new taxiway, with capacity to receive large aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and the Antonov 124. In addition, the construction of the Passenger Terminal (TPS) is planned, in order to facilitate support for the CEA.

The plan is to finish the earth moving and concreting by December 2022. The infrastructure of the work, meanwhile, is expected to be delivered by December 2024.
