Rio de Janeiro (RJ) – On Tuesday 7th, meetings of the Conference of Commanders of the American Armies defined various aspects of the new direction of the Conference of American Armies (CAA).

In the morning, in a plenary session chaired by the Army Commander, General Tomás, the results of the work carried out in the current 2022-2023 cycle were presented. The theme for the 2024-2025 cycle was also defined and the host country for the 2026-2027 cycle, Paraguay, was confirmed. The meeting also approved the entry of the Portuguese Army as a member of the Conference.

The theme of the 2024-2025 cycle of the CAA, chaired by the Mexican Army, will be “The new roles adopted by the American armies as a response to the challenges of the 21st century within the framework of international and national legislation”.

In the afternoon, commanders and representatives of the armies took part in bilateral meetings on matters of interest to their respective nations.

The activities were attended by the representative of the Inter-American Defense Board and representatives of the armies of the following countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Spain and Portugal.

Program

On November 8, the members of the CEA will accompany the operational readiness of the troops of the 1st Army Division, at Vila Militar. The commanders will then travel to the Agulhas Negras Military Academy, in Resende (RJ), where the ceremony to hand over the presidency of the Conference of American Armies from the Brazilian Army to the Mexican Army will take place.

Conference of American Armies

The CAA is a discussion forum that identifies issues of mutual interest in the field of Defense, increases cooperation and integration between the Armies, determines concrete initiatives to improve interoperability and deals with issues established by common agreement. The CAA has 29 members, including armies and international organizations.

Cycle XXXV had the obligatory theme “The contribution of the Conference of American Armies to the process of transformation and preparation of the ‘Army of the Future’ to expand cooperation and integration in facing the challenges and threats that could affect the security and stability of the American Continent”.

To discuss the issue, the CAA organized six specialized conferences, under the responsibility of different countries, to address issues such as interoperability, army transformation processes, cyber security and defense, modernization processes and doctrine development, among others.

Cycle XXXV also included a Combined Exercise focusing on humanitarian aid in the event of a natural disaster, Operation Paraná III, in the region of Foz do Iguaçu (PR). Planned in 2022 and carried out on the ground in 2023, the operation included troops from the CEA’s member armies.
