Operation “UNITAS LXIV”, the world’s oldest annual multinational maritime exercise, conducted by the United States since 1960, ended on Friday (21). This year’s edition was hosted by the Colombian Navy and included navies from 20 countries, including Brazil, which was represented by the frigate “Defensora”.

The commission began on the 11th of this month, with the purpose of testing and improving interoperability between the participating navies. The sea phase of the Operation took place from the 15th to the 20th, with the execution of several exercises.

As part of the Multinational Surface Task Unit, acting as Electronic Warfare Coordinator, the Brazilian ship carried out exercises in the four warfare environments: surface, air, submarine and cyber, with the following standing out: Night anti-aircraft firing on flare; 4.5′ cannon firing on surface target; leap frog approach exercise with the Colombian Navy ship ARC “Caldas”; and identifying, detecting and countering cyber threats against critical naval infrastructure, a novelty of this edition of UNITAS.

In the 4.5″ cannon firing exercise on a floating target, the “Defensora” occupied the first position in formation with seven other ships. The frigate successfully fired 15 rounds at the target, which was about 3,100 meters away.
After joining “UNITAS LXIV”, the frigate “Defensora” will participate in Operation “Camex Delta Amazonas”, at the mouth of the Amazon River, where it will carry out operations and naval warfare actions, aiming at controlling the maritime area in that region.

Solidarex-2023

Also in the context of Operation Unitas LXIV-2023, Defensora also participated in the 3rd edition of the Multinational Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Support Exercise Solidarex-2023. Held from July 8 to 10 in the Gulf of Morrisquillo, near the city of Coveñas, Colombia, the objective of the exercise was to enable an adequate and immediate response to natural disasters of great magnitude on the coast of the Caribbean Sea, by strengthening the interoperability of a Multinational Task Force.
The biennial exercise was attended by observer officers from Spain and the United States of America, as well as 12 ships from the following countries: Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama and Peru.

Frigate “Defensora”

The second ship to bear this name in the Brazilian Navy, the frigate “Defensora” was conceived as a Scout Ship, being equipped with sensors and armaments that allow it to locate and destroy enemy aircraft, surface ships and submarines, in addition to patrolling our waters. It displaces up to 3,800 tons and has a flight deck and hangar for a helicopter, in addition to a crew of about 200 military personnel.
