The First Squadron of the First Transport Group (1st/1st GT) – Gordo Squadron achieved an important feat on August 16. A C-130 Hercules aircraft took off from Florianópolis Air Base (BAFL) for bale throwing training in the Drop Zone, as part of the activities of the SAR (Search And Rescue) Technical Exercise.

Communication between the aircraft and the ground team was carried out using the Tactical Datalink Engine System (SDE-T), via the “Tamoio” Military Telecommunications Station (ETM), located at Galeão Air Base. The entire launch authorization process was transmitted via SDE-T.

During the training, there was a request from the Air Force General Staff (EMAER) to verify a geographical coordinate located 70 nautical miles north of Florianópolis. The aim was to make a vertical pass of the point and check what existed at that coordinate. A remote sensing satellite image was sent and, based on EMAER guidelines, the observers followed the procedures so that the information could also be transmitted via the EDS-T to the Military Telecommunications Station.

The person in charge of the Electronic Warfare Squadron of the 1st/1st GT and one of those responsible for developing the SDE-T, Petty Officer Francisco Olegário da Silva, highlights the importance of the system. “Innovation in the datalink communication process enables greater situational awareness in the search area or theater of operations, improving the quality of the information transmitted,” he explains.

The point was checked while the aircraft was in flight, without the need for telephone communication, and also by means of an image file. The test carried out on the C-130 aircraft could be adapted for the KC-390 aircraft, as well as for other military aircraft.
