On April 20th, the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) received the State Partnership Program Award (SPP Award), in Denver, USA. The Institution was recognized and chosen as the best state partnership, together with the New York State Air National Guard (NYANG), This is because the integration of the Space Operations Center (COPE), of the FAB, with the NYANG squadrons has effectively contributed to the building of space object monitoring and space access capabilities, enhancing actions in the other four domains: land, sea, air and cyber.

For the Chief of the Technical Subdepartment of the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology (DCTA), Brigadier Engineer Luciano Valentim Rechiuti, the recognition of Brazil and the FAB as the best state partnership among more than forty countries is a source of pride. “We contemplate the opportunity to employ more efforts in the space dimension, in order to build and consolidate space capabilities in the country, carrying out the Strategic Program for Space Systems (PESE) and solidifying the Brazilian Space Program (PEB). In this way, Brazil will be able to gain a place among the space powers (Space Fairing Nations) in the near future,” stressed the General Officer.

38th Space Symposium

Before the award, the FAB committee, composed by Brigadier Engineer Luciano Valentim Rechiuti, Aviator Colonel Marcello Correa De Souza, Aviator Colonel Alessandro Sorgini D’Amato and Aviator Colonel Paulo Roberto Cursino Dos Santos, participated in the 38th Space Symposium, from April 16 to 20, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. In this occasion, they were present in several meetings (Side Meetings) related to space partnerships with Organizations and Entities from the USA and allied countries. The meetings open opportunities for Brazil’s participation in international space-related exercises and operations, and reinforce the Brazilian position for the safe exploration of outer space.

The Side Meetings brought together common interests in the construction of joint space capabilities, between FAB and several space entities, providing unique opportunities for the discussion of important themes in the several Space Systems segments, with the purpose of building and consolidating capabilities related to the fifth domain: space. Among others, the meetings with the U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM), the U.S. Space Force (USSF), the U.S. Air Force (USAF), the New York Air National Guard (NYANG), the 12th U.S. Air Force (12th Air Force), the Office of International Affairs of the Under Secretary of the U.S. Air Force (SAFIA) the Joint Commercial Operations Office (JTF-SD JCO), the U.S. Civil Aviation Agency (FAA) Airports Directorate, the European Space Agency (ESA) International Affairs Office, and with the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Teaching Division (USAFA).

For Brigadier Luciano, the opportunity for discussions with several relevant space actors favors Brazil’s insertion in the select list of countries with space capabilities (Space Fairing Nations), besides contributing to the integration of Government, Industry and Academia in the Space Sector. In this sense, partnerships are excellent tools for strengthening the PESE and consolidating the PEB. “The learning we received during the symposium shows us that we are moving in the right direction and that investments in education, capacity building and training will be fundamental for building Brazil’s space capabilities,” added the General Officer.
