The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) attended the 2nd Gripen User’s Group (GUG) Conference 2023, held in Prague, Czech Republic, from November 13 to 15. The event was attended by representatives of the Air Forces of the member countries, including Sweden, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Thailand and Brazil, as well as by the Saab Company and the Swedish Defense Material Administration (FMV, from the Swedish Försvarets materielverk).

The FAB delegation was made up of a General Officer and five Senior Officers, representing the Air Force General Staff (EMAER), the Preparedness Command (COMPREP), the Aeronautical and Military Material Directorate (DIRMAB) and the Combat Aircraft Program Coordinating Committee (COPAC). The delegation took part in meetings of the Acquisition, Development and Operational Working Group, as well as the Operational and Technical Subgroups. Through presentations and debates, the participants shared the current situation of the Gripen C/D fleets of the operating countries. The Brazilian delegation, in turn, presented the status of Gripen E in its development and deployment process.

“The operational, doctrinal and logistical learning gained from the interaction between the participating Air Forces is a unique opportunity provided by the GUG conferences. During these events, it is possible to better understand the peculiarities of each operator, which adds lessons, providing a broader vision, so necessary in the aircraft deployment process,” comments the Chief of the Third Subchief of the Air Staff, Air Brigadier Renato Alves de Moraes, who led the Brazilian delegation.

Held every six months in one of the member countries, the Gripen User’s Group conferences represent an initiative between the air forces that operate the Swedish-made aircraft. Representatives from the Swedish, Czech, Hungarian, South African, Thai and Brazilian air forces share their experiences in preparing and using the supersonic fighter. With a focus on exchanging information, mutual cooperation is established with gains in operational efficiency and technical aspects of the project. In addition, possibilities for future cooperation are explored, including joint procurement programs related to the use of Gripen aircraft.
