For the first time, after taking office in February of this year, the Coordinator of the South Atlantic Maritime Area (CAMAS – Coordenador da Área Marítima do Atlântico Sul), Rear-Admiral Enrique Antonio Balbi, from the Argentine Navy, comes to Brazil for meetings and visits to the Navy. After a year of Argentine management, the trip is part of a protocol calendar of operational visits to the Navies of Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil and Uruguay, which compose the South Atlantic Maritime Area (AMAS – Área Marítima do Atlântico Sul). The CAMAS committee is composed of advisory officers from the Navies of the AMAS Member States.

The program began on the 25th, with a visit to the facilities of the Naval Complex of Itaguaí, in Rio de Janeiro. The delegation visited the sections of the Submarine “Angostura”, fourth conventional submarine of diesel-electric propulsion belonging to the Navy’s Submarine Program.

The agenda continued with a visit to the Local Command of Operational Control (COLCO) Brazil, where the updating of the doctrine of Naval Control of Maritime Traffic and procedures to provide the security of maritime traffic and the increase of maritime situational awareness were discussed. “CAMAS will keep working to maintain the security of the South Atlantic and its maritime communication lines, besides promoting the exchange of information between Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay”, said Admiral Balbi.

With the mission of coordinating the actions of management, monitoring and defense of maritime commerce, fishing and activities developed in the jurisdictional waters of the countries that make up the South Atlantic Maritime Area, CAMAS conducts operational visits to the countries that belong to AMAS, with the objective of reinforcing the bonds of friendship and maintaining the unity of communication. The committee visited the Navies of Paraguay, from March 20 to 24, and of Uruguay, from April 10 to 14.

AMAS – Área Marítima do Atlântico Sul

The South Atlantic Maritime Area was structured in 1967, to meet the Plan for the Coordination of the Defense of Inter-American Maritime Traffic. The AMAS doctrine foresees, as a purpose, to coordinate the actions of the American countries regarding the Naval Control of Continental Maritime Traffic, establishing an integrated system with the Local Operational Control Command, which allows monitoring, information exchange, and defense, in time of peace or war. The position of CAMAS is held by a Rear-Admiral, in a biannual rotation system among the Navies of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.
