The Brazilian Navy seized 243m³ of wood, during an operation carried out this Saturday (22), in the region of Estreitos, in Portel, in the Marajó Archipelago (PA). The sawn logs of jatobá, itaúba and maçaranduba were valued at R$ 400,000 by officials of the Portel Municipal Secretariat of Environment, who certified irregularities in the wood’s origin.

The cargo was on board a ferry boat. The vessel was also notified for violation of the Waterway Traffic Safety Regulation, because it was transporting cargo without the proper packaging. The seizure was carried out by the crew of the Auxiliary Notice “Breves”, which operates in conjunction with a Fast Action Boat of the Northern Riverside Operations Vessel Group, both subordinated to the Northern Naval Patrol Group Command.

“The Brazilian Navy, represented in the region by the 4th Naval District Command, periodically carries out preventive and repressive actions against cross-border and environmental crimes, among others practiced in the region, as well as contributes to the maintenance and increase of the safety of waterway traffic in its area of jurisdiction,” says Navy Captain Ondiara Barbosa, Commander of the Northern Naval Patrol Group.
