Conducted by the Brazilian Navy, Operation “Poseidon” 2023 came to an end this Wednesday (19). The mission brought together about 1,200 military personnel and six aircraft, in joint exercises between the Single Forces, aboard the Multipurpose Airship “Atlântico”. The frigate “União” also participated in the training, which took place between the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Cabo Frio (RJ).

During the three days of operation, pilots from the Brazilian Navy (MB), the Brazilian Army (EB), and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) were qualified in landings and take-offs with helicopters on board the ship. The improvement of interoperability between the Forces was achieved through the joint employment of these means. Captain Moisés, from the EB, who qualified for the first time in landing on board, emphasized the training for use in real situations. “It is important to operate on the Atlantic ship as a way to increase our knowledge, because we know that in a real conflict situation we can employ the ship as a combat platform.”

The exercises used the Navy’s AH-11B Wild Lynx; UH-12 Esquilo; AH-15B Super Cougar (operational version) and UH-15 Super Cougar (basic version) aircraft; the Army’s HM-4 Jaguar; and the Air Force’s H-36 Caracal. For Captain Fernandes, of the FAB, the experience gained with Poseidon was necessary to train techniques that come from naval aviation. “It is a unique opportunity to participate in this operation, because with the ship we were able to increase our interoperability and the projection of the military power of the Brazilian Armed Forces.

Among the exercises were Qualification and Requalification of Landing on Board; Fast Rope with Special Operations detachment; cyber threat exercise, and aeromedical evacuation.

The Commander of the Task Group, Rear-Admiral Nelson Leite, Commander of the 1st Fleet Division, highlighted that “the training exercises allow the Navy to operate together with the other Single Forces, expanding its capabilities and areas of action, by allowing the performance of tasks related to naval warfare operations, but also benign activities, such as humanitarian operations or cooperation with the Civil Defense in places where the infrastructure was affected by natural disasters.
