With a total of 320 military personnel from the Brazilian Navy, in addition to the personnel and resources from the Army and Air Force, a new phase of the “Ágata” Operation began on Monday (12). In this phase, preventive actions will be taken in the border area of the state of Roraima, and logistical support will be provided, in coordination with the environmental protection agencies and the defense of native peoples, the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police, the National Public Safety Force and other participating agencies, in confronting a public health emergency, with the fight against illegal mining in the Yanomami Indigenous Land.

The Naval Force, commanded by Rear-Admiral (Marine) Luís Manuel de Campos Mello, head of the Naval Special Operations Command, has resources from the 9th Naval District Command, as well as troops and resources from the Fleet Marine Force and the 1st Battalion of Riverine Operations.

The Fluvial Patrol Ship “Raposo Tavares”, based in Manaus (AM), is one of the means participating in the operation that, deployed to Caracaraí (RR), will support the actions on the Branco and Catrimani rivers. The ship has armored boats and a helicopter, which enhance and provide more flexibility to the Operation.

All this effort aims to contribute to the humanitarian support to the indigenous communities and the neutralization of illegal activities in the Yanomami Indigenous Land. “The mission is of great relevance. The employment of the Fluvial Patrol Ship “Raposo Tavares”, using the trinomial of ship, aircraft and marines, guarantees the presence of the Navy and, consequently, of the Brazilian State in the Amazon”, comments the Commander of the ship, Lieutenant Commander Felipe Teixeira Molinari Gentil.

The mission intends to deliver to government agencies a more peaceful scenario, making a definitive solution to the problem involving miners and indigenous people in Roraima simpler.
