Accompanied by the Navy Commander, Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, and by the Navy’s Director-General of Nuclear and Technological Development, Admiral Petronio Augusto Siqueira de Aguiar, the Minister of Defense, José Mucio Monteiro Filho, visited, this Monday (3), the Itaguaí Naval Complex (RJ), where the Submarine Development Program (PROSUB) is being developed.

PROSUB is part of the Brazilian Nuclear Program and represents the interaction of three interrelated projects: the construction of the industrial and operational infrastructure; the construction and operation of four Conventional Submarines Class “Riachuelo”; and the construction and operation of the first Conventionally Armed Submarine with Nuclear Propulsion (SCPN) – the main object of the entire Program.

During the visit, the Minister congratulated the Brazilian Navy for the excellent work and highlighted the courage to invest in a program that benefits generations of Brazilians. “The PROSUB promotes and will continue to promote a series of benefits for the Brazilian society, such as the generation of jobs, professional qualification, and allows the exchange with universities and research institutions. We will keep fighting to give continuity to this,” said the Minister.

“Riachuelo”, the first PROSUB Conventional Submarine, has been in operation since September 2022

For the Navy Commander, PROSUB has become one of the largest industrial and technological training programs ever seen in the Brazilian defense industry.

“The nationalization foreseen for the submarines encompasses hundreds of projects aiming at the transfer of technology and know-how to train national companies. The indigenous development of this technology raises Brazil to a position of prominence in the most important international defense forums,” explained Admiral Olsen.

On the occasion, the Director General of Nuclear and Technological Development of the Navy presented the advances achieved by PROSUB and spoke of the robust national industrial partnership. “Through PROSUB and the knowledge generated in the nuclear area, the Navy is also able to contribute to the Brazilian State in the areas of Energy and Health,” commented Admiral Petronio.

The program enabled the authorities and the entourage to see the facilities and attributions of the Metallic Structures Manufacturing Unit, the Construction Yard, the Madeira Island Submarine Base, as well as the “Riachuelo” Submarine, the Training and Simulator Department, besides the 3D model, where they observed the naval industrial infrastructure already installed, as well as the next steps planned for the implementation of the Specialized Maintenance Complex, intended for the future Conventionally Armed Submarine with Nuclear Propulsion (SCPN).
