Vila Bittencourt (AM) – In an operation carried out on Tuesday (09/01), the 3rd Special Border Platoon (3rd PEF) seized around 110 kg of marijuana during Operation Shield. The action demonstrated the operational readiness of the troops on the border, combined with the effective use of technology in the security and defense of the national borders with neighboring countries.
Using state-of-the-art equipment, soldiers from the 3rd PEF identified a boat with two people, rowing silently down the Japurá River. Alerted by the suspicious presence, the Platoon Commander activated the reaction force to approach and inspect the boat.
As the soldiers approached, the drivers fled along the riverbank, abandoning the boat. During the inspection, 110 kilos of marijuana were found, as well as an engine and fuel. The action reinforces the commitment to defending the border, collaborating in the fight against illicit activities, cross-border and environmental crimes in the Western Amazon.
Technology for border surveillance
The use of advanced thermal technology binoculars, as was the case in this seizure, is part of the Integrated Border Monitoring System (SISFRON). The equipment enables long-range observation with precision. They have the capacity to magnify thermal vision, adding images and geolocation – a process that allows location based on geographical coordinates.
SISFRON is a sensing and decision support system, in cooperation with operational employment, acting in an integrated manner. Its purpose is to strengthen the presence and action of the State on the land border strip, enhancing the actions of government entities with responsibilities in the area. It was conceived on the initiative of the Army Command as a result of the approval of the National Defence Strategy in 2008, which guides the organization of the Armed Forces under the aegis of the trinomial monitoring, mobility and presence.
