The Brazilian Air Force (FAB, per its Portuguese acronym) reinforced the airspace surveillance system in the country’s Northeast region with the inauguration, on July 28, of a new autonomous secondary radar at the Petrolina Senador Coelho airport, in Pernambuco (PE). Secondary radars communicate with aircraft through the transponder, sending interrogations about their identification, position and speed, as well as receiving responses that allow traffic controllers to carry out accurate airspace monitoring, identifying possible unauthorized flights.

The state-of-the-art RSM970S NG radar is part of a contract established between the Airspace Control Department (DECEA), through the Airspace Control System Implementation Commission (CISCEA), and the consortium of Omnisys Engenharia and Clemar Engenharia. In all, Brazil has 69 similar equipments in operation throughout the national territory. The agreement also provides for the installation of another radar, in Bom Jesus da Lapa, Bahia, in 2024.

“The installation of two more secondary radars in the Northeast Region reinforces DECEA’s commitment to its mission of contributing to the guarantee of national sovereignty, maintaining the continuous improvement of the Brazilian Airspace Control System,” said Lieutenant General Barbacovi.

The equipment installed in Pernambuco is certified by the Ministry of Defense as a Strategic Defense Product (SDP). It was manufactured in São Bernardo do Campo (SP), at the headquarters of Omnisys, qualified to apply in its contracts the Special Tax Regime for Defense Industry (RETID).

The inauguration ceremony of the new radar was attended by the Director General of DECEA, Lieutenant-Brigadier Alcides Teixeira Barbacovi; the Deputy Director of DECEA, Major-Brigadier Marcio Bruno Bonotto; the president of the Commission for the Implementation of the Airspace Control System (CISCEA), Brigadier Engineer Alexandre Arthur Massena Javoski; the Head of the Technical Subdepartment of DECEA, Brigadier Engineer Alessander de Andrade Santoro; the Head of the Administration Subdepartment of DECEA, Brigadier Engineer André Eduardo Jansen; and the commander of the Third Integrated Center for Air Defense and Air Traffic Control (CINDACTA III), Oscar Vinicius Pisco Rocha da Silva. Omnisys president Rodrigo Gonzales Madugno and Clemar representative José Luiz D’Aquino also attended the ceremony.
