The Air Force Academy (AFA), located in the city of Pirassununga (SP), hosted the 18th edition of the Academic Congress on National Defense (CADN). The event, held from August 28th to September 1st, brought together more than 230 academics, both civilian and military, from different regions of the country, to discuss issues fundamental to the nation’s defense. Each year, the Congress is organized by the Higher Defense School (ESD), in partnership with the Armed Forces’ Officer Training Schools: the Naval School (EN), the Agulhas Negras Military Academy (AMAN) and the Air Force Academy (AFA).

Over the course of the five days, participants took part in lectures and debates with Professors Eduardo José Viola and Paulo Eduardo Aguiar Saraiva Câmara, as well as exhibitions of military equipment and short courses in an exchange of knowledge and experience.

At the ceremony, awards were given to the best papers presented. First place was awarded to the project entitled “National Laboratory for Maximum Biological Containment (Nb4): A study of priorities for use according to Defense interests”, from the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV).

Subsequently, the other positions went to the following articles: “A Bipolar Multipolarity? Brazil’s challenges and possibilities in the face of a new architecture for the International System”, from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS); “Prospects for a New Order: Hegemonic Dispute between China and the United States and the Paths of Brazilian Foreign Policy in the International System”, from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFP); and, finally, the work entitled “Strategic autonomy and the financing of the Brazilian aeronautical industry: An analysis based on the public budget (2018-2022)”, by AFA Cadets, which received an Honorable Mention.

During the ceremony, the Chief of Education and Culture of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces, Army General Francisco Carlos Machado Silva; the AFA Commander, Air Brigadier Marcello Lobão Schiavo; and other authorities congratulated the dedication of those involved in building this field of knowledge of interest to every citizen.

After the Congress was over, the participants enjoyed a performance by the Esquadrilha da Fumaça (Smoke Squadron).

CADN’s next destination, in 2024, will be the Naval School, in the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJ).
