The agreement will allow access to British funding (UKEF) and support defence deals worth up to 1 billion pounds, contributing to President Lula’s commitment to modernize Brazil’s industrial base.

During the G20 Foreign Ministers’ event in Rio de Janeiro, the British Foreign Secretary, Lord David Cameron, met the Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, to talk about how the multilateral system can respond to the main global challenges.

They signed a Defence Collaboration Agreement Implementation Agreement, which will allow access to UK Export Finance (the UK Government’s Export Credit Agency) and support business in the defence sector worth up to £1 billion, contributing to President Lula’s vision of developing Brazil’s defence industrial base and revitalizing the country’s shipbuilding industry.

The UK reaffirmed the priority of Brazil’s G20 Presidency on the reform of global governance and wants to work closely with the country on the reform of multilateral institutions. The UK continues to support Brazil’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

The ministers also discussed the conflict in Gaza and agreed on the urgent need for Israel to allow more aid into Gaza. Minister Cameron also presented the UK’s plan for an immediate pause to allow aid in and hostages out, and then move towards a permanent and sustainable ceasefire, without a return to destruction, fighting and loss of life.

They also spoke about Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing the devastating human impact of the war and the importance of Brazil’s perspective on the world stage for building peace. Both countries will continue to strive to achieve this goal.
