The Humaitá submarine is the newest vessel in the Brazilian Navy. It is the second of the four conventional submersibles (diesel-electric propulsion) built in Brazil by the Submarine Development Program (Prosub), one of the Naval Force’s strategic projects to expand the fleet and develop Brazilian industry. The first was the Riachuelo submarine, delivered in September 2022. With a length of 72 meters and a speed of 37 km / h, the Humaitá submarine will patrol areas of strategic importance for Brazil in the South Atlantic and the Blue Amazon, as the country’s maritime borders are called.

“The competent conduct of Prosub is worthy of special recognition, because its deliveries not only expand and strengthen our Naval Power, but also because they raise Brazil’s profile as an increasingly relevant player on the international stage,” said Defense Minister José Mucio Monteiro Filho, during the ceremony to incorporate the submarine into the Navy’s operational sector, this Friday (12), at the Itaguaí naval complex, in Rio de Janeiro.

On the occasion, he also emphasized the Brazilian naval industry. “I reaffirm that we will do everything in our power to keep this production line active, guaranteeing the operation of this exceptional installed industrial capacity and the retention of this highly qualified workforce.”

Prosub – Prosub is currently underway and preparing for delivery the activities related to the Tonelero and Angostura conventional submarines and the Álvaro Alberto nuclear-powered submarine. The program represents an increase in the naval industry and a strengthening of the Brazilian economy, with emphasis on the generation of jobs, around 60,000 direct and indirect, and the training of technicians and engineers.

The ceremony was attended by the French Ambassador, Emanuel Lenain; the Chief Minister of the Office of Institutional Security of the Presidency of the Republic (GSI/PR), General Marcos Antonio Amaro dos Santos; the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Fleet Admiral Renato Rodrigues de Aguiar Freire; the Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense, Luiz Henrique Pochyly da Costa; the President of Itaguaí Construções Navais, Renaud Poyet, as well as other military and civil authorities.
