On Wednesday (31), the Brazilian Navy (MB), the Federal Revenue Service (RFB) and the Federal Police (PF) inspected luggage and passengers using sniffer dogs at the Port of Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The joint action, entitled Operation “Tridente”, took place in the context of Operation “Lais de Guia”, known as the “GLO of the SEA”.

With a focus on the pre-Carnival period, today’s action is part of the activities to combat drug trafficking, arms and other illicit activities, which also take place in an integrated manner through naval patrols and inspections, with approaches to suspicious vessels in the anchorage areas and access channels to the Port of Rio de Janeiro, Sepetiba Bay and the maritime region of the Port of Santos. In all, around 1,250 people are working in the three locations, including MB military personnel, RFB officials and PF agents.

“Operation ‘Tridente’ takes place within the scope of Operation ‘Lais de Guia’, which maintains preventive actions to control and patrol the Ports of Rio de Janeiro, Itaguaí and Santos, with the aim of deterring the practices of organized crime and preventing criminal organizations from gaining access to strategic outlets for goods in the region. This type of activity reinforces the interagency nature of the ‘GLO of the Sea’, whose collaborative efforts and respect for the competencies of each body contribute to synergistic actions that benefit society,” said Captain Elinton Barcelos Coutinho, Commander of the Maritime Task Force in Operation “Lais de Guia”.

For Federal Revenue Auditor Ronaldo Feltrin, this Wednesday’s operation, as part of the GLO, stems from the history of seizures close to Carnival. “This action represents the joint action of the agencies participating in the GLO in the Ports of Rio de Janeiro, Itaguaí and Santos. As has been the case since the beginning of the GLO, the operations are daily and unite the efforts of the three agencies, enabling greater participation and presence of the State in the country’s Ports,” he said, who is the Deputy Superintendent in the 7th fiscal region, which includes the states of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro.

“On this date, in Operation ‘Trident’, we are specifically employing our staff in the Specialized Units, the Special Maritime Police Nucleus, with men on the boats carrying out inspections, as well as our kennel staff carrying out inspections of luggage and passengers. All of these actions are in the interest of combating drug trafficking, arms trafficking and other illicit behavior in the port of Rio de Janeiro, Sepetiba Bay and the Port of Santos,” concluded Jackson Rosales, Federal Police Delegate and substitute coordinator of the PF’s role in the GLO operation.

“Lais de Guia”

Since November 6, 2023, MB military personnel have been deployed to strengthen actions to prevent and repress crimes, such as drug and arms trafficking, as part of the GLO operation, scheduled to last until May 3, 2024, according to Decree No. 11.765, signed by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on November 1, 2023.

Through Operation “Lais de Guia”, named after the sailor’s knot known for its usefulness and reliability, the Navy is working in coordination with Public Security agencies in the land and sea areas of the ports of Itaguaí (RJ), Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Santos (SP).
