Oil Transfer at Sea increases the operational capacity of the NAM “Atlântico”

Yesterday (21), the Multipurpose Aerodrome Ship (NAM) “Atlântico” carried out the Transfer of Oil at Sea (TOM) exercise, with the participation of the Logistics Support Ship (NApLog) “Jacques Chevalier”, of the French National Navy. The event took place near Cabo Frio (RJ).

The aim of the exercise was to verify the ship’s ability to refuel at sea, in order to increase its independent permanence in the area of operation for long periods. The NApLog “Jacques Chevalier” acted as the oil supplier, pumping the fuel, and the “Atlântico” as the recipient of the material. The method used has the potential to transfer up to a thousand liters per minute.

“The success of this exercise is a reflection of the various training sessions that our crew carries out on a daily basis. Each member of the military played a fundamental role in the successful performance of the activity. We thank the French Navy for their cooperation. The interoperability of the Brazilian and French navies contributes to the exchange of knowledge and is the result of the mutual respect and brotherhood that these two countries have for each other,” said the Commander of the NAM “Atlântico”, Captain Eugenio Campos Huguenin.

Tactical maneuvers and air operations

In conjunction with the French Navy, exercises such as Leap Frog (approach maneuvers) and Light Line (maneuvers to maintain position and distance between ships) were carried out. Tactics for approaching contacts of interest and interrogating target elements were also explored.

As part of the exercise, the NAM “Atlântico” boarded the “Jacques Chevalier” with the support of a detachment of MB Combat Divers (MEC), by means of a fast rope – the rapid landing of a helicopter into a hostile environment using a cable. The MEC then inspected the vessel’s compartments, interrogated the opposing force’s crew and seized them. The French ship also carried out the same training, intercepting the “Atlantic” with its crew.

Also with a view to the interoperability of the Brazilian Navy’s resources, from November 20 to 22, pilots and aircraft from the Air and Naval Force Command, Seahawk, Super Cougar and Wild Lynx models, carried out landing qualification and requalification exercises on board the NAM “Atlântico”, including night flights. There was also training in cargo transportation through the aircraft’s external area.
