Initiative aims to train military personnel to act in conflict situations

On Thursday (23), the Brazilian Navy (MB) held the “INCURSEX-2023” exercise on Marambaia Island, located in Sepetiba Bay (RJ). The activity brought together naval and Fleet military resources, with the aim of improving the ability to conquer an objective in hostile territory, through the infiltration of resources and troops, with a planned withdrawal, based on the use of Naval, Air and Marine Forces.
The training simulated a territorial conflict between two countries, caused by ethnic issues, which intensified due to disputes over agricultural land, water resources and strategic control of a port, directly impacting the economies of these nations. Faced with the imminent threat of the use of missiles, the countries confronted each other through amphibious incursions, involving the strategic landing of troops to neutralize enemy installations.
For Corvette Captain Igor Piumbim, Operations Officer of the Incursion Force, the exercise aims to “work on the concept of projecting naval power on land, aimed at the continuous improvement of the amphibious force, an essential element of the Navy’s expeditionary capacity”.
Understanding “INCURSEX”
The Amphibious Incursion is one of the modalities of the Amphibious Operation and is characterized by the rapid penetration or temporary occupation of an objective in a hostile or potentially hostile coastal region, followed by a planned withdrawal, which is its main characteristic.
“INCURSEX” mobilized around 150 military personnel in activities aimed at providing a solution to the military problem presented, using part of the Fleet’s Marine Force to project power from sea to land. The main aim of these activities was to raise the level of readiness and command and control capacity for action at various levels.
The Amphibious Incursion is a highly complex naval warfare operation. Training for this type of operation contributes to the versatility and flexibility of the Force. This makes the Force better prepared to carry out other types of missions, including those of Limited Use of Force, such as Law and Order Operations.
For the Commander of the Fleet Marines Force and Commander of Operation Lais de Guia, Vice-Admiral (Marines) Renato Rangel Ferreira, the training aims to maintain the units’ level of readiness for the broad spectrum of operations. “This type of training keeps us ready for moments like the ones we are experiencing with the GLO. Many of the procedures carried out in the training can be transferred to the GLO at sea, with the necessary adaptations.”
NAM “Atlântico”
During “INCURSEX”, the military carried out a Ship-to-Ground Movement from the Multipurpose Aerodrome Ship (NAM) “Atlântico” to Armação Beach, located on Marambaia Island. Military personnel embarked in Amphibious Caterpillar Trucks moved into the field and took up blocking positions, supporting the action on the objective carried out by a Group of Amphibious Commandos. Artillery fire (105 mm howitzers) on the enemy reinforcements ensured the troops’ safety.
For the Commander of the NAM “Atlântico”, Sea and War Captain Eugênio Huguenin, the use of the Fleet Captain contributed to the effectiveness of the exercise. “This type of training reinforces the importance and flexibility of this ship. Its designation as a Multipurpose Aerodrome Ship is precisely because it can be used for a wide range of tasks,” he explained.
This year, the ship has contributed to humanitarian aid actions for municipalities on the north coast of São Paulo, affected by heavy rains in the region. The “Atlântico” was mobilized and quickly transported the vehicles used to clear the streets, as well as providing field hospitals and health professionals to assist the local population at that emergency moment.
