Brazilian Army receives prototypes of the Software Defined Radio ProjectBrazilian Army receives prototypes of the Software Defined Radio Project

Brasília (DF) – The Army Technology Center has received 16 prototypes of the vehicle cycle of the Ministry of Defense’s Software Defined Radio Project (RDS DEFESA). The equipment is produced by the company AEL Sistemas, from Porto Alegre, and the project involves the participation of the three Armed Forces and several Brazilian companies.

The RDS DEFESA Project includes the research and development of vehicle radios, portable radios and backpack radios, covering the HF, VHF and UHF bands (2 to 512 MHz). As well as increasing freedom of action in cyberspace, the equipment contributes to the interoperability of the Armed Forces’ communications. The project also boosts the Defence Industrial Base, strengthens ties between military organizations and science and technology institutions, and creates conditions for the start of research into Cognitive Radios.

The Army Technology Center’s technical team has carried out waveform portability in the V/UHF band of the 16 prototypes and will soon complete HF portability. The team is also carrying out functional, performance and environmental tests to check that the prototypes meet the requirements established for the project. The radios will then be sent for evaluation at the Army Evaluation Center.
