Resende (RJ) – On August 19, at 11 a.m., the Agulhas Negras Military Academy (AMAN – Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras) will hold one of the most important ceremonies in the academic calendar, the Sword Presentation to the 387 cadets of the General Rodrigo Octávio Class.
During the ceremony at the Pátio Marechal Mascarenhas de Moraes (PMMM), cadets from all regions of Brazil will receive their rapiers: 65 from the South, 190 from the Southeast, 33 from the Midwest, 73 from the Northeast and 10 from the North.
Cadets from friendly nations are also enrolled in their first year at AMAN, coming from Bolivia (1), Cameroon (2), Guyana (2), Namibia (2), Paraguay (1), Peru (1), São Tomé and Príncipe (2), Senegal (3) and Vietnam (2), making a total of 16.
Cadet Marcelo Fabricio Nocchi, 25, from Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, came first in the Basic Course and will receive the rapier from the highest authority present at the ceremony. Godfathers and godmothers will hand it over to the other cadets.
About the Sword
Held since 1932, the ceremony is repeated annually and is considered one of the most significant rites in the cadets’ training.
The Basic Course cadets receive their rapiers during Soldier’s Week, after 20 months of training, which began at the Army Cadet Preparatory School in 2022.
Instituted by Marshal José Pessôa, the creator of AMAN, the rapier is a miniature replica of Caxias’ undefeated sword and has become the Cadet’s most important symbol. It is the symbol of honor and military servitude for future officers, as it represents the patriotism, dignity, bravery and altruism of the patron of the Brazilian Army.
Maintaining a tradition of more than 90 years, they will wear their swords until the last day of the course, when they will return them to receive their Brazilian Army officer swords.
