Information security. Cyber defense. Flight simulation production. Agile methodologies. Generation of data necessary for decision making. These and many other essential tasks for the daily accomplishment of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) mission are the responsibility of the Information Technology professional, commonly called IT.

With a strategic role in FAB, nothing could be more fitting than a day to celebrate and recognize the importance of the work developed in this area. Thus, December 1st was established as the Aeronautics Information Technology Day, by means of Ordinance No. 1.914/GC3, which was signed on October 29, 2019. The commemoration is related to the date of creation of the Center for Informatics and Statistics of the Ministry of Aeronautics (CINFE), on December 1, 1983.

The Director of the Directorate of Information Technology of the Aeronautics (DTI), Air Brigadier Luiz Guilherme da Silva Magarão, details about the importance of IT in assisting strategic decision-making within the Aeronautics. “In the last decades, the Air Force has invested in decision support tools. In this scope, IT has acted as a protagonist in the development of systems and management data panels, which allow the High Administration to define the allocation of human and budgetary resources in a more effective and efficient way”, he highlighted.

Still according to Brigadier Magarão, Information Technology plays a fundamental role in FAB. “The DTI, as the central body of the Air Force Information Technology System, is responsible for managing the life cycle of the various corporate and simulation systems, as well as their development and support. It is also responsible for managing the acquisition and maintenance of IT Assets, as well as all Information Security prevention activities, with new and necessary investments in the area of Cyber Defense. This is an essential activity, with great capillarity in the internal scope of the Force”, he concluded.

Aeronautics Patron of Information Technology

Major Brigadier Engineer Tércio Pacitti is the Aeronautics Patron of Information Technology. The General Officer passed away in June 2014, at the age of 85, and was one of those responsible for the creation of the Aeronautics Computing Center in Rio de Janeiro (CCA-RJ), the first Military Organization of the Aeronautics Command focused entirely on Information Technology (IT). He joined the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA) in 1952 to pursue a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He devoted himself to IT at the then Ministry of Aeronautics.

In the academic area, he earned a PhD in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, USA. In the military field, he was the first military dean of ITA, where he idealized, conceived and created the Computer Engineering course.
