War Arsenal completes test of new mortarsWar Arsenal completes test of new mortars

Rio de Janeiro (RJ) – The Rio de Janeiro War Arsenal carried out a series of technical firing tests to validate 19 manufactured mortars and a revitalized mortar at its facilities between December 12 and 13.

The tests consisted of a battery of technical shots, with different loads and angles, with the aim of checking the functioning of all the weapons’ components. The team of specialists also takes pressure and muzzle velocity measurements, based on Brazilian Army standards. The data collected undergoes rigorous analysis. Once the results have been approved, the mortars are distributed to Army units, where the troops can operate them safely.

During the two days of testing, more than a hundred shots were fired to enable the delivery of the following weapons:

  • 15 81 mm 81 Medium Anti-Load Mortars, manufactured at the War Arsenal;
  • 4 P 120 M2A1 Stingray Heavy Mortars, manufactured at the Arsenal de Guerra; and
  • 1 Royal Ordnance 81 mm mortar, revitalized.

After passing the metrological inspection, the War Arsenal in Rio plans to finish the production work and start delivering the mortars on December 22, 2023.

The Arsenal is subordinate to the Manufacturing Directorate and carried out the tests with the support of the Army Evaluation Center, which provided the firing range, equipment, personnel and guaranteed safety conditions. The joint work between the organizations guarantees the effectiveness of the Science and Technology System, which is dedicated to providing the most advanced materials for military use.
