US Intelligence Warns of Possible Iranian Attack on Israel: Tensions Rise Amidst Regional Unrest

The Wall Street Journal published this morning (12) that, according to US intelligence reports, Iran could attack Israel in the next 24 to 48 hours. The likely targets are military bases in the north and south of the country.

The attack would be a response to the death of Iranian officer Mohammed Reza Zahedi on January 1, in a bombing near the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. The action was attributed to Israel, which has not commented on the matter. Zahedi was a senior commander of the Quds Force, part of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRCG), whose central aim is to expand Tehran’s influence in the Middle East.

The IRCG, although part of the Iranian army, is considered by several countries to be a terrorist organization and finances several similar groups in the region. These include Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon, which have been at war with Israel since the October 7 massacre.

The American newspaper, however, also pointed out that there are sources linked to Iran who claim that the country has not yet taken any decision on a direct attack on Israeli soil. Posts on social media, however, suggest that one of the likely targets is the Dimona nuclear base in the Negev or a small airport in Haifa.

There is great concern in the international community about the possibility of this, which could lead to a significant escalation in tensions in the Middle East.
