After five days of intense advanced exercises at sea and in the air, Operation “ADEREX” 2023, carried out in the maritime area between Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Santos (SP), came to an end this Friday (12). The mission was marked by the qualification of military personnel, ships and aircraft, in integrated action, against threats in Naval Warfare environments: submarine, surface and air, electronic and cyber.

Throughout the week, 20 types of exercises were performed, such as pilot qualification and requalification for on-board landing, cyber threat actions, interception air control, light cargo transfer, positioning in formation, cannon fire and night machine gun fire. The training, of multiple and simultaneous threats, includes air attack operations against surface and submarine targets; protection against submarine attack, surface and air units; cargo transfer exercise at sea; and maneuvers in formation for ship protection.

One of the distinguishing features of this operation was the use of high-tech ammunition, such as the MK 48 torpedo, and the “Aspide” surface-to-air missiles with Albatros system, launched by the “Defensor” Frigate. This system allows the integration of the frigate’s sensors and armaments and enables a more precise and assertive attack or defense.

“This type of training represents the ships’ high level of readiness, affirming that the Brazilian Navy is ready to defend the nation’s interests in the Blue Amazon,” said the Commander of the “Defensora” Frigate, Frigate Captain Cezar Batista Cunha Santos.

Integrated action of the meansDuring the mission, about 2 thousand military personnel embarked on ships and aircraft. The following were employed: airship, escort ship, submarine, submarine rescue ship, helicopters, attack and patrol aircraft, which operated together, expanding the capabilities. Fighter and attack aircraft also acted as enemies, generating defense reactions with the ships’ weapon systems. “The focal point of ‘ADEREX’ is to raise the training level of ship and aircraft crews, operating together, with more advanced attack and defense exercises. The exercises generated during training portray real employment situations,” said Task Group Commander, Rear Admiral André Luiz de Andrade Felix, Commander of the 2nd Fleet Division.

Operation “ADEREX” takes place several times throughout the year, with exercises of increasing complexity, both during the day and at night. The mission aims to qualify the crew members individually and as a team, using all the capabilities of the ships and the action of naval and naval aviation resources in an integrated and simultaneous way.

For the Commander in Chief of the Fleet, Vice-Admiral Edgar Luiz Siqueira Barbosa, the operation is an excellent opportunity to train the crews of the ships, aircraft and submarine that make up the Task Group. “I would like to highlight the success in launching the torpedo and the missile, which demonstrates the good functioning and effectiveness of the weapon systems. We also had the opportunity to carry out exercises in interception air control and anti-submarine operations. The result was very positive for increasing the readiness of the Fleet,” said the Admiral.
