New Industry Brazil recognizes the strategic importance of the aerospace sectorNew Industry Brazil recognizes the strategic importance of the aerospace sector

The New Industry Brazil program, launched by the federal government, outlines goals for the country’s industrial development until 2033 and reinforces the importance of the aerospace sector as a driver of cutting-edge technology and innovation. For AIAB (Aerospace Industries Association of Brazil), this is an important step.

The NIB provides for public investment of around R$300 billion in stimulus and development actions, and is divided into six axes. These amounts will be made available, according to the government, through “specific lines, non-reimbursable or reimbursable, and resources through the capital market, in line with the objectives and priorities of the missions to promote national neo-industrialization.”

The aerospace sector is highlighted in the program’s so-called Mission 6, dedicated to the development of technologies of interest to national sovereignty and defense. Its main objective is to achieve by 2033, through a set of actions, 50% autonomy in the production of critical technologies for the country.

The aim of this mission is to develop the following industrial niches:

  • Nuclear energy;
  • Communication and sensing systems;
  • Propulsion systems;
  • Autonomous and remotely controlled vehicles.

“The AIAB actively participated in the construction of proposals within the CNDI [National Industrial Development Council] for Nova Indústria Brasil, in close cooperation with the CNI [National Confederation of Industry]. The actions envisaged in the program represent a decisive step towards boosting national development and strengthening the Brazilian aerospace industry,” said AIAB president Julio Shidara.

“It is a fundamental and unprecedented milestone that the defense industrial sector, which includes the aerospace segment, has received such prominence in an industrial policy.”

New calls for proposals

As part of the Nova Indústria Brasil package of actions, 11 public calls were launched by Finep (Financier of Studies and Projects) with R$ 2.18 billion in non-reimbursable resources – 10 calls for companies and one for Science and Technology Institutes in the health complex.

In all, R$66 billion is planned for actions to promote innovation (including reimbursable and non-reimbursable resources) over the next four years, part of the R$300 billion NIB. Finep will contribute R$41 billion of this total, and the BNDES the rest.

AIAB reiterates its optimism and its commitment to actively collaborate to achieve the goals set by the NIB and contribute to strengthening the Brazilian aerospace industry.
