On Thursday afternoon (06), northern Israel suffered a new attack from Lebanon; three people were injured

Conflicts between Israelis and Palestinians which started last Wednesday (05) had further developments today: 34 rockets were fired from southern Lebanon this afternoon against northern Israel. 25 were intercepted in the air. At least three people were injured, two were hit by shrapnel and another was injured while fleeing from a bomb. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on social media that the government “will take the necessary measures to defend the country and its people.”

No group took responsibility for the attack. The Hezbollah organization denied having any involvement and blamed Palestinians. Lebanese security reinforced the theory by claiming that the rockets were fired from occupied territory by refugee camps. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), meanwhile, attributed the authorship of the attack to the Hamas group. The Foreign Ministry even published a photo on its instagram showing Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh visiting Qassam rocket brigade units in southern Lebanon before the attack, and claiming that Hamas is responsible for the attack and that these units were established to attack Israel from the north as well, not just from Gaza. The raid came a day after Hamas leader Haniyeh arrived in Lebanon, further reinforcing suspicions of the group’s involvement in the artifact launches.

The Israeli security cabinet has met to decide the next steps. The prediction is that Israel will respond strongly against Hamas in Gaza. The leader of the opposition in Israel, Yair Lapid, stated that “when it comes to Israel’s national security, the opposition will give the government full support for a harsh IDF response.”

The offensive is the worst since 2006, when Lebanon was at war with Israel. During the conflict, thousands of rockets were launched from Lebanon into Israeli territory.

Tensions escalated when a group of 400 Palestinian youths locked themselves in the Al Aqsa mosque during the early morning prayer. The passage of Palestinians in the Jerusalem area had been relaxed for the celebration of Ramadan. The temple is the third holiest in the world, and is important for both the Jewish and Muslim faiths. The Israeli police had to intervene.

The Palestinians fired fireworks and threw stones at the Israeli forces, who had to use morale bombs to remove the people who had set up barricades to prevent them from moving around the site. The terrorist group Hamas spoke out, encouraging Palestinians to go “en masse to the Al-Aqsa mosque to defend it.

André Lajst, political scientist and executive president of StandWithUs Brazil explains that the motivation of the attack is an attempt to create an environment of chaos and escalate conflicts. “Hamas’ intention in encouraging actions like this is precisely to use these acts as a justification to launch rockets against Israel and position itself as the ‘defender of Al Aqsa’ and the Palestinian people, thus gaining more respect, notoriety, and morality in front of Palestinian groups and the Palestinian Authority. The expert also regrets that innocent people are being injured and that Palestinians are prevented from practicing their faith due to the actions of terrorist groups such as Hamas.
