Exercise COMAEX took place between September 11 and 22 in Brasília (DF), bringing together around 200 military personnel. Held annually, the exercise is in its 6th edition and aims to train military personnel to plan and conduct Aerospace Operations. In addition to the 120 military personnel who worked in the federal capital, another 65 were involved in the training, working at the Airspace Control Institute in São José dos Campos (SP).

As well as making the troops able to act in real situations, the training aims to update the Operations Planning and Conduct Manual (MPCOA). According to the Head of COMAE’s Space Operations Center, Air Brigadier Rodrigo Alvim de Oliveira, who commanded the Component Air Force (FAC) at COMAEX, the training allows the planning and conduct of operations to be put into practice and perfected.

“Taking part in Exercise COMAEX is a great opportunity to put into practice and train the procedures for conducting aerospace operations. It’s very gratifying to be able to contribute to improving the doctrine that governs all COMAE operations,” said Brigadier Rodrigo.

On Tuesday (19/09), the Commander of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), Air Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, visited the exercise facilities at the Aerospace Operations Command (COMAE). Accompanied by the Minister of the Superior Military Court, Lieutenant General Joseli Parente Camelo; the former Commanders of the Air Force, Lieutenant General Juniti Saito and Lieutenant General Antônio Carlos Moretti Bermudez; among other General Officers of the Air Force High Command, he highlighted the interoperability between the Armed Forces. “COMAE is a Command that relates to the other Forces, it is a Joint Command that is permanently activated. We have military personnel from the Navy and the Army here and, with the results of exercises like COMAEX, we are able to show the importance of this interoperability between the Forces,” he said.

The Commander of COMAE, Air Brigadier Hudson Costa Potiguara, highlighted the importance of the progress made in each exercise. “COMAEX is in its sixth edition and each time we improve something because war evolves every year. We have doctrines to follow and the training shows the need to update these doctrines,” he explained.

Use of satellites

The use of aerospace power as a tool for asserting national power is a reality, especially as a tool for maintaining national sovereignty. Thus, the use of satellites was reinforced in this edition of COMAEX.

“An Air Force never goes to war alone. Conflict always involves the use of the Ground Force, the Naval Force, the Special Forces, many partners and allies. The real challenge is the integrated application of all these capabilities. In the 2023 edition, the use of satellites was a highlight in support of the intelligence and telecommunications areas, contributing to actions that define failure or success on the modern battlefield,” said the Head of the Satellite Control Division at the Space Operations Center, Lieutenant Colonel Luis Felipe de Moura Nohra.
