Brasília (DF) – Major Gabriela Bernardes, an Army officer who was on an international mission in Sudan, was featured in two United Nations (UN) publications. The officer was interviewed by the UN News Podcast, a program published on the UN News channel, belonging to the Organization, and was also the subject of an article on the UN News website.

In the UN News Podcast, Major Gabriela spoke about her professional and personal experience in the African country, commented on her experience as a military officer in a UN mission and highlighted the difficulties of the Sudanese population. Major Gabriela also told the interviewers about the lessons learned and the feelings that remained after the mission. “We go with the expectation of helping and [it is] we who return carrying many more examples, many more good things that they give us with this ability to live with the minimum,” she said.

Mission in Sudan

In June 2022, Major Gabriela began working as a reporting officer for the Ceasefire Standing Committee of the United Nations Integrated Transitional Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), a role that aimed to monitor and record ceasefire agreements and negotiations in the Darfur region of western Sudan. In mid-April 2023, however, Sudanese Army troops clashed with Rapid Support Force paramilitaries, triggering a wave of conflict in the country. The situation made it mandatory for several members of the international mission to leave the country, including Major Gabriela.
