On February 15, the Brazilian Navy’s Director General for Nuclear and Technological Development (DGDNTM), Admiral Petronio Augusto Siqueira de Aguiar, and Admiral Alexandre Rabello de Faria, received the President of the Brazilian Nuclear and Binational Energy Holding Company (ENBPar), Luis Fernando Paroli. During the meeting, they discussed strategic projects and talked about cooperation between the institutions and the potential of nuclear energy.

This was followed by a meeting at the Navy Technology Centre in São Paulo (CTMSP), organized by its Director, Vice-Admiral Guilherme Dionizio Alves, where they discussed the conditions for supplying uranium, in its various forms, on the international market, the role of Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB) in the national context and ways in which the Brazilian Navy can contribute to the Brazilian Nuclear Programme.

For the Director General, this visit was important because it brought the Science, Technology and Innovation sector even closer to ENBPar, a public company linked to the Ministry of Mines and Energy. “The synergy resulting from collaboration between the institutions has the potential to boost nuclear development. This partnership not only contributes to consolidating the pioneering spirit in science and technology of both institutions, but can also directly benefit different sections of society,” said Admiral Petronio.

According to the President of ENBPar, the partnership, through INB, with the Brazilian Navy should be prioritized and deepened, due to the positive fruits it has brought to Brazilian society. One of the most recent examples of this was the inauguration of the first phase of the Uranium Enrichment Plant, just over a year ago, in Resende (RJ). With this, INB took another step towards reducing the degree of dependence on contracting isotopic enrichment services abroad for the production of fuel for national nuclear power plants. This progress was only possible thanks to the content produced by CTMSP and the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN/CNEN), developers of uranium enrichment technology using the ultracentrifugation process. The Brazilian Navy is responsible for manufacturing, installing and commissioning the ultracentrifuge cascades used in the plant inaugurated by INB, one of the companies that make up the ENBPar holding.

“The closer and more constructive the relationship between ENBPar and the Brazilian Navy, the better the results will be in producing clean energy at an affordable cost. Periodic meetings between two sectors of government are therefore essential, as they are complementary and make Brazil one of the 13 countries in the world that master the nuclear fuel cycle, with different industrial production capacities,” explains President Paroli.
