The Naval Control of Maritime Traffic Exercise (CNTM) – TRANSAMÉRICA XII, conducted by the Peruvian Navy, took place between August 7 and 18. In addition to the Brazilian Navy (MB), the training brought together the navies of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay, as well as the United States as an observer country.

The aim of the activity is to coordinate the tasks to be implemented by the navies of the American continent, which are necessary to establish an integrated system that allows them to monitor and defend inter-American maritime traffic, in coordination with the civilian transport and fisheries directorates, thus contributing to maritime security in the region.

Within the MB, the Maritime Operations and Protection of the Blue Amazon Command (COMPAAz) was responsible for supervising and participating in the exercise, through the Maritime Operations Center (CopMar), with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Naval District Commands and their Captaincies, Delegations and Agencies based in the Southeast, Northeast and South. In total, 156 military personnel and 19 Military Organizations from Brazil took part.

Simulations

The TRANSAMÉRICA XII exercise was carried out in a fictitious scenario, with the participation of real merchant ships. By simulating situations such as illegal immigrants on merchant ships, evacuation and interdiction of ports, piracy and environmental crisis, the adoption of appropriate CNTM measures is tested in response to each simulated incident. In this way, the participating navies have the opportunity to improve their readiness, cooperation and interoperability in protecting maritime traffic in a critical context.

For the Commander of the Maritime Operations Center, Captain João Batista, the exercise is fundamental for training and increasing maritime situational awareness: “Due to the diverse and multifaceted threats that permeate the world maritime scene, the doctrine of Naval Control of Maritime Traffic is even more relevant and current, as can be seen in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. As such, we must improve our doctrine on a daily basis, seeking to contribute to rapid and effective responses to critical global events in the maritime environment that could impact national interests.”

Exercise TRANSAMERICA takes place every two years, with one organizing country. The choice is made by the member countries participating in the Inter-American Naval Conference Specialized in Maritime Naval Control (CNIE-CNTM). Brazil conducted the first exercise in 2001.
