To strengthen the defense mentality in Brazilian society, the Ministry of Defense (MD), through the Special Planning Advisory (ASPLAN), promoted the Symposium “Defense and National Power”. The event, which started on Tuesday (25), ended on Thursday (27), at the Defense College, in Brasília (DF). The activity, which brought together civilians and military personnel, highlighted the main strategic defense projects of the Ministry and the Armed Forces.

The MD’s Special Advisor for Planning, Brigadier General Fernando Marques de Freitas, spoke about the review of the National Defense White Paper (LBDN). “In this phase of revision of the White Paper, we are working on the chapter ‘Defense and National Power,’ and we are seeking to raise the main aspects of this theme, which are connected to defense in a practical way. This will guide an inter-ministerial work, since we focused on some Ministries”, he emphasized.

During the event, several themes were approached, such as “Defense and National Logistics”; “Defense and the Defense Industrial Base”; “Nuclear and Submarine Development Programs”; “The KC-390 and F-39 Gripen aircraft”; and “Program to Support Education and Scientific and Technological Research in National Defense (Pro-Defense)”; among others. At the end of the presentations, working groups were formed to debate and reflect on the issues presented.

Portfolio of Strategic Defense Projects 2020-2031

The Strategic Defense Projects Portfolio 2020-2031 was approved by the High Council of Governance of the Ministry of Defense and documents the main strategic defense initiatives – programs and projects of high relevance to the sector and that enhance and drive the achievement of one or more sectorial objectives that make up the Strategic Defense Projects Portfolio 2020-2031.

Besides contributing to the implementation of the Portfolio, the strategic defense initiatives bring benefits to the Brazilian society, since they create conditions for the development of dual use technologies (which also benefit society), train professionals from various areas, generate jobs, and promote the interaction of Defense with other national and international strategic sectors.
