Manaus (AM) – The Brazilian Army continues to take action to prevent and repress cross-border and environmental crimes in the Triple Frontier region. This week, two illegal mining dredges were destroyed on the Juami River, in Amazonas. The illegal equipment was intercepted during Operation Poraquê, launched by the Amazon Military Command in partnership with public security agencies. The actions are based on intelligence data provided by the Management and Operational Center of the Amazon Protection System (CENSIPAM).

Troops from the 16th Jungle Infantry Brigade have been covering vast stretches of rivers and dense jungle to carry out actions to combat illegal gold mining, predatory hunting and fishing, drug trafficking and arms trafficking. The Army’s presence in the region is an effort to preserve the region’s environment.

Agents from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) and the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) are also taking part in Operation Poraquê, in partnership with the Army to identify and combat illegal activities. Working in synergy with other agencies expands the operational capacity of the 16th Jungle Infantry Brigade in defending the Amazon, protecting indigenous communities and monitoring the border.
