European defense and security market on the rise

Europe is an important and prominent market for doing business. The region has been signaling the need to strengthen its defense capabilities and increase military spending on the continent since the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022.

By 2023, 11 NATO member countries had crossed the threshold of investing at least 2% of their GDP on defense, some with spending of up to 4% like Poland. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that this year 18 members will reach the alliance’s spending target of at least 2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defense, and that NATO as a whole will reach the average of its national defense budgets. In 2023, it stood at 1.85% of the combined GDP of the 31 countries.

Around 1.7% of Germany’s GDP is in the defense market, equivalent to 46.9 billion euros. The country has announced plans to increase its military spending and plans to reach 2% this year. Norway and Germany currently have one of the largest partnerships for economic and defense projects in Europe.

In 2023, the German government authorized the export of at least 11.71 billion euros (R$62.83 billion) in military arsenal, a record amount. The figures were released by the Ministry of Economy in response to a request from German MP Sevim Dağdelen. The country is among the top five arms exporters. In addition, arms imports by European countries from 2018 to 2022 increased by 47% and by NATO members by 65%, according to a survey by SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute).
