The Brazilian Air Force (FAB), through the Airports Commission for the Amazon Region (COMARA), took part in discussions with the Pará State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability (SEMAS-PA) in the first half of March, with the aim of aligning all the work stages at Belém Air Base (BABE) with the criteria and legislation relevant to the 30th UN Conference on Climate Change (COP-30). To this end, a multidisciplinary team was engaged to continue negotiations with members of SEMAS.

In November 2025, the city of Belém will host one of the most important climate-related events on the world calendar. Leaders from several countries will meet to discuss crucial issues related to climate change.

According to COMARA’s Vice-President, Colonel Tiago Cortat de Melo, hosting an event of this magnitude requires meticulous planning and significant investments in infrastructure. “One of the main concerns is to guarantee the safety and efficiency of air operations during the Conference. To this end, the preliminary project for the expansion of the BABE airfield is underway, with a view to accommodating the aircraft that will bring the leaders and delegations from various countries,” he said.

Also according to Colonel Cortat, the planned investments include not only the construction of a new parking yard for aircraft the size of the Airbus A-350, but also the widening of the taxiways, the construction of a fast-connecting access road, the implementation of security systems and the provision of support services. All to ensure an efficient and safe operation, capable of handling the intense air traffic expected during the event.

In addition to the specific measures for the operation of the aerodrome, the Conference organizers are paying attention to other issues related to sustainability. Actions are planned to minimize the use of natural resources, promote recycling and reduce carbon emissions during the event, reinforcing the commitment to protecting the environment.

With this in mind, an on-site visit was made to Belém Air Base by SEMAS-PA technicians and representatives of COMARA’s Environment Section, so that they could see the studies and licenses required for the areas planned for improvements. On that occasion, they were received by the Head of the Military Air Operations Cooperation Section (SCOAM), Major Felipe Augusto Albuquerque Moraes.

The choice of Belém to host the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference reflects the importance of the Amazon region in the global context of environmental issues.

“COP-30 is an opportunity for the Force to get closer to institutions in the state of Pará. “An opportunity to strengthen ties in favor of developing the airport infrastructure of Belém and Pará,” concluded COMARA’s Vice-President.

As part of the military organization’s mission, sustainability qualifies all of COMARA’s activities, from the conception of projects to the delivery of works, including its strategic and multimodal logistics.
