From May to August, the Aeronautical Psychology Institute (IPA) held the seventh edition of the Aviation Psychology Course (CPAv), aimed at preparing military and civilian psychologists to work in the aviation context, helping crews to achieve greater efficiency, effectiveness and safety in air operations.

In order to promote a more edifying study experience, the IPA had the participation of a diverse and extremely qualified teaching staff, represented by military personnel from the Brazilian Navy (MB), the Brazilian Army (EB), the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), the Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro (PMERJ) and civilian psychologists.

During the distance learning phase, CPAv 2023 students had the opportunity to study content on five subjects: Aviation Psychology, Basic Aeronautics, Human Factors and Aviation, Aerospace Medicine and Post-Aircraft Accident Psychological Support.

The classroom phase, held in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), included activities with experiences in the aeronautical environment, giving students the opportunity to take part in the Physiological Adaptation Internship at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IMAE), as well as Operational Activities in various Air Units based at Santa Cruz Air Base (BASC) and Galeão Air Base (BAGL). Technical visits were also made to the Air Navigation Management Center (CGNA), the Galeão Airspace Control Detachment (DTCEA-GL) and the Helibras Helicopter Simulator Training Center.

In this edition, 22 students completed the course: two MB psychologists; two EB psychologists; seventeen FAB psychologists and one psychologist from the Republic of Paraguay. “Participating in the CPAv was a great professional learning experience. During the distance learning phase, we studied various relevant topics in the field of aviation psychology. I’d also like to highlight the face-to-face phase, which was a differentiator, as it was an opportunity to see in practice some of what we studied in the distance learning phase, adding a lot to our work,” said Psychologist Lieutenant Joyce Evangelista Barroso Ramos.

The closing ceremony for CPAv 2023 took place on August 4 and was presided over by the Institute’s Director, Colonel Ivaldeci Hipólito de Medeiros Neto, who stressed the importance of the course. “It’s a pleasure to be able to contribute to the training of psychologists to work in the complex aeronautical context,” he said.

First place in the course

Psychologist Lieutenant Maria Isabella Almeida Baião, from the São Paulo Air Force Hospital (HFASP), was honored as first place in CPAv 2023 and commented on the opportunity to take part in the training. “It was an enriching experience for my professional and personal life. Understanding how the world of aviation works, and especially the work of flight controllers, was highly relevant to my work as a psychologist in the Brazilian Air Force,” said the officer.
