The Brazilian Ministry of Defense (MD) and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) have signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement (ACT) with the aim of enhancing the real estate assets under the administration of the Armed Forces. The initiative aims to optimize asset management and generate complementary income, which can be reinvested in institutional actions, including defence and security. The Minister of Defense, José Mucio Monteiro, and the Director of Project Planning and Structuring at the BNDES, Nelson Barbosa, took part. The meeting took place on Tuesday (22) at the ministry’s headquarters in Brasília (DF).

The partnership with the BNDES will allow experts from the agency to analyze the assets and propose measures or actions to make them more efficient and sustainable. The intention is to reduce costs, rationalize expenses and look for alternatives to make better economic use of assets such as land, buildings and other properties.

“We have taken an important step with the signing of the agreement. We will have a real and objective result at the end of this work, done in partnership between the ministry’s excellent technical staff and the technical staff of a bank the size of the BNDES,” said Minister José Mucio.

The partnership with the BNDES does not require a budget allocation and will offer flexibility for the Armed Forces to indicate which assets should be studied, without the obligation to commission additional studies to structure projects.

Also present during the agreement were the Secretary General of the MD, Luiz Henrique Pochyly da Costa; the Chief of Staff of the General Secretariat, Franselmo Araújo Costa; the Secretary of Budget and Institutional Organization of the MD, José Roberto de Moraes Rego Paiva Fernandes Júnior; and the Director of the Department of Organization and Legislation, Erika Melissa Oliveira França Nassar.
