United Nations Staff Officers Course held at the Naval Peace Operations Center

The Naval Peace Operations Center (CopPazNav) of the Almirante Sylvio de Camargo Instruction Center (CIASC) held the second edition of the United Nations Staff Officers Course between April 1 and 12, which aims to improve the skills and abilities of military officers to operate in United Nations peacekeeping missions.

The course consists of a distance learning phase and a face-to-face phase, providing participants with an immersion in practical activities and academic discussions, led by experts in the field of Peace Operations. In this way, participants have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of international security strategies and United Nations standard operating procedures, as well as improve their skills in leadership, planning and decision-making in complex and multifaceted contexts.

For the course instructor, Lieutenant Commander Iury Barra Nova de Assis, “this educational initiative demonstrates the commitment of the Brazilian Navy and the Marine Corps to contribute to the continuous improvement of the capabilities of military professionals. The aim is to prepare them to face the complex and dynamic challenges of peace missions around the world, as well as strengthening international cooperation ties and promoting global peace and security.”

COpPazNav’s Assistant Officer in Charge, Corvette Captain (FN) Lucas Ranulpho Vieira Silva, gives a brief assessment of the Center’s performance, pointing out that “2023 was a year of great challenges for COpPazNav and 2024 began by reaffirming the Marine Corps’ commitment to helping Brazil be aligned with the United Nations’ agendas and also to meeting the Navy’s operational demands.”
