On Tuesday (23), the Brazilian Navy took command of Combined Task Force (CTF) 151, with the mission of coordinating multinational naval forces in operations to combat piracy in one of the world’s main maritime routes, which includes the Gulf of Aden, the Somali Basin and the Arabian Sea.

With a mandate that can vary from three to six months, Brazilian Rear Admiral Antonio Braz de Souza has the challenge of leading efforts to ensure security in a region that, in addition to cases of piracy, has seen recent attacks on merchant ships by Houthi terrorists from Yemen.

“By accepting the invitation to lead this force once again, the Brazilian Navy, the first South American country to play a leading role in this multinational maritime coalition, reaffirms its dedication to the maritime community and particularly to the Combined Maritime Forces. This commitment aims to intensify global security and stability, contributing to collective well-being,” said Rear Admiral Antonio Braz de Souza, during the ceremony to assume command of CTF 151 in Bahrain.

This is the third time that the country has commanded CTF 151, which also works to combat human trafficking and illegal fishing. It represents one of the five operational arms of the international task force Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), whose work extends to combating criminal and terrorist actions in an area of approximately 3.2 million square miles of international waters, something around 8 million km2, especially in the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Oman, the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.
