In order to train naval and aeronautical resources and increase the readiness of the Brazilian Navy, on March 3, ships from the Brazilian Fleet left Rio de Janeiro for Operation “ADEREX-I/2024”. The Multipurpose Aerodrome Ship (NAM) “Atlântico” and the Frigate “Defensora” are carrying out the first stage of the operation.

During the period, air operations, cargo transfer exercises at sea, aeromedical evacuation, cyber threats, among others, were carried out. On the NAM “Atlântico” alone there are 1,100 military personnel on board, and on the frigate “Defensora” there are a further 213 military personnel.

The ships docked in Recife (PE) on March 8 and stayed until March 13, where they took part in the city’s 487th anniversary celebrations. On March 9, the ships were open to the public at the Nelcy Campos Maritime Passenger Terminal and received more than 7,700 people.

The ships left for Cabedelo (PB) on March 13. During this sea phase, exercises of increasing complexity are carried out, both during the day and at night. The most advanced phase of the operation begins on the 21st of this month, when the NAM “Atlântico” and the frigate “Defensora” meet the frigates “Liberal”, “Independência” and “União”, which also left Rio de Janeiro on the 13th.

The Commander of the Task Group and Commander of the Fleet’s 2nd Division, Rear Admiral Jorge José de Moraes Rulff, explains that “in Operation ADEREX-I/ 2024, exercises are carried out at sea with ships and aircraft operating in Task Groups, in order to raise the level of training of our Fleet’s naval and aerial resources”.

As well as the Fleet’s flagship and frigates, taking part in the operation are the submarine “Riachuelo”, helicopters SH-16 Seahawk, AH-11B Wild Lynx, AH-15B Super Cougar; AF-1 Skyhawk fighters; and a Combat Diver Detachment.

Recife’s anniversary

In commemoration of the 487th anniversary of the city of Recife, celebrated on March 12, the Navy took part in events in honor of the date. As well as public visits, the Marine Corps (CFN) bands performed at Marco Zero, in Recife Antigo.
In the morning, the Martial Band paraded its traditional maneuvers and played famous hits such as “Maria, Maria” and “Aquarela do Brasil”. In the afternoon, the Fuzishow band thrilled the audience with classics from Brazilian Popular Music, such as “Maresia”, by Adriana Calcanhoto, the theme of the 2023 Sailor’s Day Campaign.
