THE 20TH EDITION OF THE LARGEST FORUM ON INTERNATIONAL SECURITY IN LATIN AMERICA WILL TAKE PLACE ON JUNE 1ST AND 2ND AT THE MUSEUM OF TOMORROW, IN RIO DE JANEIRO, AND WILL BE BROADCASTED LIVE ONLINE FOR FREE

The current and main global geopolitical challenges and their impacts on Europe and Latin America will be discussed at the XX Forte International Security Conference, the largest forum on international security in Latin America, which takes place on June 1st and 2nd. Completing 20 years, the already traditional event in the national calendar occupies for the first time the Museum of Tomorrow, in downtown Rio, gathering authorities, diplomats, representatives of the armed forces and academics from Latin America and Europe with the aim of stimulating the debate for a just and peaceful international order. The initiative is of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS-Brazil), in partnership with the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI) and support from the Delegation of the European Union in Brazil.

During the two-day conference, subjects related to the theme “The Changing Global Order: Facing the Perfect Storm” will be discussed. The meeting aims to promote dialogue between Latin America and Europe in the face of global challenges, which increasingly demand unity among actors and the defense of international rules that ensure peace.

The first panel of the event, “International Organizations in the Face of the Perfect Storm: The Long Road to Global Peace” will bring together Belén Martínez Carbonell, Managing Director of the Global Agenda and Multilateral Relations of the European External Action Service; Benedetta Berti, Head of Policy Planning in the Office of NATO’s Secretary General; Amena Yassine, Advisor to the Minister of State of Foreign Affairs of Brazil; and Feliciano de Sá Guimarães, Academic Director of the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI), who will moderate the meeting.

Belén, Benedetta, Amena and Feliciano will debate the ways to recover international organizations in face of the loss of efficiency of multilateral institutions, responsible for the good functioning and stability of the international system. After all, are institutions simply reflections of state power or can they restrain powerful states? Are we witnessing a collapse of multilateralism?

The “Global Economy and strategic partnerships in times of war” will be the theme of panel 2, which will address the impacts of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine for the global economy and how, even in a system marked by high economic interdependence, it was not possible to avoid a war in the heart of Eurasia; besides the relevance of the Mercosur-European Union Agreement in this scenario. Issues such as economic sanctions, reduced supply of essential commodities and the benefits that strategic geopolitical partnerships can provide in times of war will be under discussion.

Veronique Lorenzo, Head of the South America Division of the European External Action Service; Henning Speck, National Security Advisor to the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group in the German Bundestag; and the moderator Roberto Jaguaribe, Brazilian Ambassador to Germany and CEBRI’s Advisor, will participate in the panel.

The Forte Conference is open to the public. To participate, you just need to register, free of charge, through the link https://forte.avscvirtual.com.br. The event will be broadcast online for free in real time and will also have simultaneous translation in Portuguese, Spanish, English, German and LIBRAS.
