Washington (DC) – In August, a meeting was held by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense of the United States of America (OUSD – U.S. DoD) at the headquarters of the Department of Defense at the Pentagon in Washington-D.C./USA.

The purpose of the event was to align proposals for new bilateral partnerships in defense technologies, as well as to discuss the progress of activities already underway between the Armed Forces of the two nations. The meeting was attended by various authorities from that government and the Brazilian Ministry of Defense (MD), as well as general officers and senior officers from the Brazilian Army, the Brazilian Navy and the Brazilian Air Force.

During the event, the BR-US technological information exchange agreements were discussed, under the Master Information Exchange Agreement (MIEA), in force since 2017, and research, development, testing and evaluation agreements, the 2022 RDT&E instrument, as well as debates on other topics of common interest.

Representing the Army’s Science, Technology and Innovation System (SCTIEx) were Division General Armando Morado Ferreira, Head of Education, Research, Development and Innovation, and Colonel Guilherme Pinto Guimarães, Coordinator and Manager of Project PA A-23-0001 BR-USA, from the Army Technology Center (CTEx).

The Army representatives discussed

  • the status of the instrument for the exchange of information on armaments, ammunition and energy materials;
  • the status of the chemical and biological defense information exchange instrument;
  • the status of the information exchange instrument being finalized for signature, dealing with land vehicle systems under the leadership of the Manufacturing Directorate;
  • status of the current Project Agreement PA A-23-0001, Development of Ammunition for Heavy Mortar Systems 120 mm – extended ranges;
  • proposals for new project agreements in the area of Manufacturing Systems on the topics of additive manufacturing and batteries for military vehicles; and
  • proposals for new project agreements of interest to the Systems Development Center.

Also noteworthy was the signing of the second Brazilian project agreement with the USA for collaboration on ballast water control systems by the Brazilian Navy.

The activities were consolidated in joint minutes, signed by Mr David Cornelius (Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation in Armaments of the OUSD) and Major Brigadier Luciano Valentim Rechiuti (Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation – DECTI of the MD), materializing important steps and strengthening the scientific-technological relations of Defense between Brazil and the United States of America.
