Santa Maria Air Base (BASM) is coordinating, from March 20th to April 4th, the Operational Exercise of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), whose objective is to train the teams of the Air Squadrons that carry out the Air Force Actions of Aerospace Reconnaissance, Advanced Air Control, Electronic Interference and Attack.

The training involves about 160 military personnel, aircraft from the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), among them: the A-1, the R-99, the P-3AM, the P-95BM, and the ARP RQ-450 and RQ-900, as well as IGLA-S anti-aircraft defense means, from the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), and M-113 and Gepard armored vehicles, from the Brazilian Army (EB).

In all, 10 Units are participating in the exercise, which involves Squadrons of Fighter, Reconnaissance and Patrol Aviation, the Fourth Squadron of the First Communications and Control Group (4º/1º GCC), the First Air Defense Group (1.º GDAEE) and the Third Air Defense Group.  The Brazilian Army participates in the training with means from the 29th Armored Infantry Battalion (29th BIB) of Santa Maria (RS) and the 6th Battery of Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Artillery (6th Bia AAAe Ap).

“The Operational Exercise IVR 2023 stands out as one of the most important of the Preparedness Command (COMPREP), due to the focus on relatively new capabilities and training in the FAB that need to be developed. The challenge of exploring the limits of the sensors that equip our aircraft depends on the knowledge and experience of our crews and analysts, but also on the scenarios we offer during EXOP IVR. This exercise is the best opportunity for us to improve and consolidate tactics, techniques and procedures that are essential to ensure efficiency in the fulfillment of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance actions,” explains the Commander of the BASM and Director of the Exercise, Air Force Colonel Luciano Antonio Marchiorato Dobignies.

To enable the control and communications during the Exercise, as well as provide signal emissions, the training also has the support of the Department of Airspace Control (DECEA), through the Fourth Squadron of the First Communications and Control Group (4.º/1° GCC) – Mangrulho Squadron, which enables the Command and Control in remote regions.

“Another important aspect of this exercise is the reports: Reconnaissance Mission Reports (REMIR) and the Vigilance Mission Reports (REVIG), which are also enhanced at the end of the image analyses, in order to make more objective the relationship between what is trained and the product that is expected in employment missions” added Colonel Marchiorato.

EXOP IVR 2023 will allow a deeper understanding of the capabilities of FAB’s sensors and analysts and, consequently, subsidize the dissemination of doctrine and the programming of on-board Electronic Warfare equipment.
