Saab announces the successful delivery of five state-of-the-art Arthur systems to the British Army, providing a deeper weapon locating radar capability for the future.

On July 22, 2024, five state-of-the-art Arthur systems, named TAIPAN by the British Army, were delivered, accepted and are now in the 5th Regiment of the British Royal Artillery.

Replacing MAMBA – last generation’s Arthur radar – TAIPAN offers the British Army rapid entry and exit from position, high operational mobility and precise counter-battery operations, locating a greater number of targets at a wider range with reduced electronic warfare signatures, taking advantage of Saab’s Digital Antenna technology. This guarantees survivability, reliability and high availability. The British Royal Artillery formally accepted TAIPAN for the 5th Regiment on June 28 at Larkhill Camp.

“We are immensely proud to support the British Army with our state-of-the-art TAIPAN systems. Our relationship with the Army and the Arthur system is based on years of experience stretching back to operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Saab team looks forward to continuing to support the UK, which will become the first user of the new current and next generation Arthur systems,” said Andy Fraser, Managing Director of Saab UK.

“Saab is our main partner for both MAMBA and TAIPAN, and what it, as a company, has and continues to provide to our Armed Forces is extremely impressive. MAMBA has more than proved its worth and TAIPAN is a step change in capability,” said Lieutenant General Sir Andrew Gregory KBE CB, Master Gunner at St James’s Park.

Future maintenance and additional work will be carried out at Saab’s UK-based Radar Center of Excellence in Fareham, as part of Saab’s strategy to expand its global industrial base outside Sweden. In addition to the UK, Arthur is in service in 12 other countries, including 6 NATO countries and South Korea.
