Saab offers new autonomous capability for naval vesselsSaab offers new autonomous capability for naval vessels

Saab presents Autonomous Ocean Core, a turnkey autonomous control system that offers autonomy capabilities for surface and subsurface naval platforms in military and civilian missions.

The Autonomous Ocean Core is an independent vessel control system with an open architecture, designed to make vessels autonomous and increase the success of their missions at sea. It provides basic autonomy, including vessel control, for platforms on or below the ocean surface and allows operators to continuously add additional features without losing the built-in safety functions.

With the Autonomous Ocean Core integrated, unmanned vessels can operate in missions such as mine detection and clearance, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, as well as electronic warfare.

The system has different modes of maneuver within a mission, each of which supports precise control and operational flexibility based on the needs of the mission. In addition, the system can be configured to operate in three different ways, each adapted to specific operational needs and security requirements.

The system is ready to perform tasks immediately, with or without additional functionality. With safety guaranteed, it provides a solid basis for expanding autonomy capabilities through Saab’s ongoing development and collaborations with third parties. “The development of autonomous and unmanned naval units is progressing, improving the capabilities of maritime security operations. The Autonomous Ocean Core can boost key operational strengths for monotonous, arduous, dangerous and expensive tasks. This control system gives our customers a tactical advantage, increasing availability and efficiency and making them less dependent on active manpower,” says Mats Wicksell, senior vice president and head of Saab’s Kockums business area.

Saab’s leadership in autonomous systems includes Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs) and Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) that work with seabed infrastructure, anti-submarine warfare training and mine hunting.
