Boa Vista (RR) – The Brazilian Army (EB) has been using, since January 22, through the Army’s 4th Aviation Battalion (4th B Av Ex), HM-1 Pantera, HM-2 Black Hawk and HM-4 Jaguar aircraft in logistical air transport to the Yanomami Indigenous Land, in the state of Roraima, cooperating with the humanitarian aid operation for the indigenous Brazilians.

During a month of uninterrupted activities, the army aviation performed about 155 flight hours, consuming more than 100 thousand liters of aviation fuel and delivering approximately 60 tons of food to the indigenous people. In addition, it carried out around 50 aeromedical evacuations of Yanomami for treatment in hospitals in Boa Vista and transported military personnel and civilians from the various agencies involved in the operation.

The 4th B Av Ex is based in Manaus (AM) and has as its mission combat and logistical support, providing aeromobility to the Amazon Military Command.

Published on January 20, 2023, Presidential Decree No. 11,384 established the National Coordination Committee for Confronting the Unassisted Health Care of the Populations in Yanomami Territory. In addition to this decree, on January 30, 2023, Presidential Decree No. 11,405 was issued, which provides for the measures to confront the Public Health Emergency of National Importance and to combat illegal mining in Yanomami territory to be adopted by federal administration agencies, with the involvement of the Ministries of Defense, Health, Social Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger, and Indigenous Peoples.

On February 3, 2023, through the Ministry of Defense Directive GM-MD nº 710, a Ministerial Directive was approved that activated the Joint Operational Command Amazon (Cmdo Op Cj Amz) and guides the support of the Armed Forces for actions to confront the Public Health Emergency of National Importance and to combat illegal mining in the Yanomami Territory, located in the area of the State of Roraima and part of the State of Amazonas.

The Brazilian Armed Forces, through the Ministry of Defense, are involved in Operation Yanomami 2023, which is being carried out from the Boa Vista Air Base (BABV), in Roraima (RR). Among its missions, the following stand out: launching and distribution of food baskets to serve the indigenous people; sending supplies to rebuild the runway of the Surucucu Airfield (RR); Aeromedical Evacuations (EVAM) for care at the Hospital de Campanha (HCAMP); control and surveillance of airspace with the creation of the Air Defense Identification Zone (ZIDA); providing intelligence data; and logistical air transport for the teams from the Federal Police, the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), the National Security Force, and other federal government agencies and entities that participate directly in the neutralization of aircraft and equipment related to illegal mining.

To date, the following actions have been carried out: 1,513 consultations at the FAB’s Hospital de Campanha (HCAMP); 7,542 deliveries of food baskets; 140 tons of materials transported; more than 500 military personnel involved; more than 980 flight hours; and 126 aeromedical evacuations.

To meet the demands, FAB’s A-29, E-99, R-99, C-98 Caravan, KC-390 Millennium, C-105 Amazonas, H-60 Black Hawk and H-36 Caracal aircraft are in action; EB’s HM-2 Black Hawk and HM-4 Jaguar; and the MB’s UH-15 Super Cougar.

Support for Yanomami has largest airdrop operation in recent years

Boa Vista (RR) – The Armed Forces have been carrying out, since January 23rd, the launching of cargo in the context of the indigenous humanitarian aid operation in the state of Roraima. More than 135 tons of materials have already been launched in the region, including food baskets, material for maintaining the landing strip, bottled water, and fuel.

The preparation and launching actions are carried out by teams from the Army and the Brazilian Air Force. The deployment of the Folding, Parachute Maintenance and Air Supply Battalion (B DOMPSA), of the Parachute Infantry Brigade (Bda Inf Pqdt), headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, and the 1st Squadron of the 15th Aviation Group (1/15th GAV – Onça Squadron) work day and night to ensure the uninterrupted logistical flow of the operation.

The B DOMPSA teams and the Jaguar Squadron have already launched 296 loads ranging from 227 to 1000 kilos each. On February 19, 2023, an unprecedented multiple launching of 8 simultaneous cargoes from a C-105 Amazon was carried out, using the whole cargo capacity of this aircraft. To ensure the success of the launches, the equipment used is maintained in Rio de Janeiro.
